27/11/2017 From CERN: “Fermilab joins CERN openlab, works on ‘data reduction’ project with CMS experiment”

Fermilab, the USA’s premier particle physics and accelerator laboratory, has joined CERN openlab as a research member. Researchers from the laboratory will collaborate with members of the CMS experiment and the CERN IT Department on efforts to improve technologies related to ‘physics data reduction’. This work will take place within the framework of an existing CERN openlab project with Intel on ‘big-data analytics’.

26/10/2017 CERN alumna turned deep-sea explorer

Each summer, the international research laboratory CERN, home to the Large Hadron Collider, welcomes dozens of students to work alongside seasoned scientists on cutting-edge particle physics research. Many of these students will pursue physics research in graduate school, but some find themselves applying the lessons they learned at CERN to new domains.

In 2011, MIT undergraduate Grace Young was one of these CERN summer students.

24/10/2017 Students at the Intel HPC Developer Conference

We are making an investment in the next generation of developers. Amazing individuals with diverse interests are our future. From SnapChat* to CERN,* to SONAR,* young developers are already changing the world.

22/10/2017 CERN to Revamp its Information Technology Apparatus

CERN, home of Large Hadron Collider (LHC), is on the verge of revamping the way it handles information as it readies itself for new technological challenges that lie ahead.

19/10/2017 CERN openlab students reflect on summer projects

CERN openlab’s summer student programme ended last month, after 37 students spent nine weeks working on advanced computing projects with applications in high-energy physics and beyond.

Over the summer, the students attended a lecture series, visited ETH Zurich’s office and joined a hackathon — working on advanced computing projects with applications in high-energy physics and beyond.

At the same time, the students were also dedicated to their individual projects, which covered a diverse range of topics, including high-performance computing, big data, visualisation and machine learning.

18/10/2017 Particle Physics: Unfolding the mysteries of nature

Particle physics deals with the study of the subatomic particles and their interactions. All the masses of the universes galaxies, planets, everything is made of the subatomic particles. Till today, there are many fundamental particles discovered like electrons, quarks, leptons etc. Through the study of behavior of these particles and their interactions, we can know about the universe, we can understand what principle the universe really follows. More than 95% of the mass of the universe is dark matter and dark energy. We have not known much about them. There are thousands of scientists working globally and billions of dollars is invested for understanding about the 95% mass of the universe.

09/10/2017 On cloud nine at CERN

Burning at a scorching 40°C, I was sitting in my office, close to the border of Switzerland and France — countries where inhabitants are accustomed to doing things that helps their spirit dance with nature. And yet, I was tucked away in the confines of an empty building. I was constantly wondering how I ended up getting an internship at the world’s largest and most revered physics laboratory — CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire — a European organisation for nuclear research). Rather than trusting my credentials and believing that I truly deserved to be there, I thought the selection committee had a terrible mix up while selecting me.
