05/09/2016 Single-Root Input/Output Virtualization (SR-IOV) with Linux Containers

Virtualization is a technology offering an abstraction layer between software and hardware. It can emulate a hardware platform in order to provide the operating system abstractions of various resources. It is also a means to easily manage hardware resources and to run services in the cloud. One of the main disadvantages of the traditional hypervisor-based virtualization is, however, that it introduces a large overhead with respect to memory and CPU1 usage. Linux* Containers (abbreviated to LXC) is a lightweight alternative to the traditional approach, providing separation of namespaces and file systems while running all processes on a single kernel. Combined with Single-Root Input/Output Virtualization (abbreviated to SR-IOV) it can provide a solution that allows the containers to appear in the network as separate compute-nodes with exclusive MAC2 addresses, while sharing one link and physical network adapter.

29/08/2016 Atom Smashing using Machine Learning at CERN (CERN Openlab project)

Used Apache Spark to streamline different predictive prototypes by gathering information from CMS, ran predictive models and proposed datasets which will become popular over time. Evaluated quality of individual models, performed component analysis and selected best predictive model for new set of data.

27/08/2016 RACKSPACE AND CERN COOPERATE IN HYBRID CLOUD

The Open Cloud specialist Rackspace Hosting has a cooperation with the CERN openlab closed. As part of a long-term cooperation, they intend to provide a hybrid cloud solution based on OpenStack for public and private clouds available.

The partnership between the cloud and hosting provider Rackspace Hosting (NYSE: RAX, WKN: 938 334) and the CERN builds on the longstanding experience of CERN in terms of internal IT on to private cloud solutions on an open source cloud operating system to develop.

The European Scientific Institute (ESI) was founded in 1994 at the initiative of CERN-based physicists and a group of European universities in order to develop high level training courses in the fields of particle accelerators, particle and astroparticle detectors, medical physics and scientific medical computing. ESI’s Schools principally target an international audience of post-graduate students (MSc, PhD) and young professionals working in research institutes, hospitals or industry. Located at Archamps-Technopole, just outside Geneva, ESI is supported by the CERN, in the form of faculty, computing resources, etc.
