Board of Sponsors meeting launches CERN openlab's next phase

On the 8^th and 9^th of May, the CERN openlab Board of Sponsors gathered at CERN to officially close phase III of the collaboration, and to launch its fourth phase, which will run through 2012 to the end of 2014.

Welcomed by the Head of CERN openlab, Bob Jones, delegates from industry member companies and CERN management joined CERN openlab staff to review the third phase. Various talks highlighted key achievements, and celebrated the positive impact on the development of Grid and computing services which underpin the LHC. They also looked forward to future plans for development.

The fourth phase of CERN openlab will address topics critical to the continued growth of the CERN scientific programme, such as cloud computing, business analytics, the next generation of hardware, and security for myriads of network devices. The industry investment over the three years of the fourth phase represents more than eight million Swiss Francs.

Rolf Heuer, CERN Director General chaired a Round-Table discussion at the end of the day with the heads of delegations from the openlab partner companies, HP, Intel, Oracle, Intel, and Huawei as a contributor for a year, and thanked all CERN openlab partners and contributors for their continued support. He emphasized that the fourth phase of CERN openlab will be instrumental in addressing the growing computing challenges posed by increases in LHC luminosity and energy in future.

The second day brought an opportunity to widen the scope of the meeting, showcasing the scientific diversity of CERN, future needs of the experiments, and exploring how CERN openlab fits into the broader picture.

CERN Research Director Sergio Bertolluci spoke on the scientific programme of CERN, Pierre Vande Vyvre, Project Leader of the ALICE Data Acquisition Project, gave an experiment’s-eye-view of CERN’s computing needs and how they will change as the LHC’s energy and luminosity increase. A key development in processing data from the LHC and its experiments will be the creation of the CERN' s remote data centre, plans for which were outlined in a talk by Wayne Salter, Computing Facilities Group Leader in the CERN IT Department.

Bernd Panzer-Steindel, CTO and resource manager in the CERN computer centre, turned the focus towards strategic direction outilining how CERN is moving towards an agile infrastructure making sure of reasoned virtualisation. This presentation was followed-up by a discussion and wrap-up session. Bob Jones concluded: “CERN openlab has established itself as a reference thanks to the excellent relationship and on-going commitment of all partners and contributors during the past 11 years. The combined knowledge and dedication of the engineers from CERN and the companies have produced remarkable results. The launch of this fourth phase is an exciting time for CERN openlab and I am confident that we will be equally successful in the future.”

Over the past decades, rapid developments in digital and sensing technologies, such as the Cloud, Web and Internet of Things, have dramatically changed the way we live and work. The digital transformation is revolutionizing our ability to monitor our planet and transforming the way we access, process and exploit Earth Observation data from satellites. This book reviews these megatrends and their implications for the Earth Observation community as well as the wider data economy. It provides insight into new paradigms of Open Science and Innovation applied to space data, which are characterized by openness, access to large volume of complex data, wide availability of new community tools, new techniques for big data analytics such as Artificial Intelligence, unprecedented level of computing power, and new types of collaboration among researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs and citizen scientists. Identification of Complex Dynamical Systems with Neural Networks (2/2)

The identification and analysis of high dimensional nonlinear systems is obviously a challenging task. Neural networks have been proven to be universal approximators but this still leaves the identification task a hard one. To do it efficiently, we have to violate some of the rules of classical regression theory. Furthermore we should focus on the interpretation of the resulting model to overcome its black box character. First, we will discuss function approximation with 3 layer feedforward neural networks up to new developments in deep neural networks and deep learning. These nets are not only of interest in connection with image analysis but are a center point of the current artificial intelligence developments. Second, we will focus on the analysis of complex dynamical system in the form of state space models realized as recurrent neural networks. After the introduction of small open dynamical systems we will study dynamical systems on manifolds. Here manifold and dynamics have to be identified in parallel. Third, we will move on to large closed dynamical systems with hundreds of state variables and will compare causal versus retro-causal models of the observations. The combination of these models will lead us to an implicit description of dynamical systems on manifolds. Fourth, we will discuss the quantification of uncertainty in forecasting. In our framework the uncertainty appears as a consequence of principally unidentifiable hidden variables in the description of large systems. Finally we will end up with a discussion on causality and predictability.

CERN signed a knowledge transfer agreement with the company ETM, a 100% owned subsidiary of Siemens AG, headquartered in Austria. ETM develops Simatic WinCC Open Architecture (WinCC OA), a SCADA software (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) that is key to industrial control and automation. This system is used widely across a broad range of industries, from traffic management, water and energy to the oil and gas industry. The agreement enables ETM to give its customers access to visualisation software developed by CERN.

Machine learning and data analytics are hot topics at CERN openlab workshop

Last week, CERN openlab held a workshop on machine learning and data analytics. The event, which took place on Friday 29 April, saw experts from both research and industry gather in the CERN IT Department for a full-day of presentations and lively discussion.

The morning featured presentations from representatives of the four large LHC experiments — ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb — on their current projects and future challenges in these areas.

During the afternoon, representatives from industry were also invited to give their perspective. This included presentations from CERN openlab partner companies Intel and Siemens, as well as contributors Cisco and associates Yandex. The other companies to present at the event were Cloudera, Google, IBM, Microsoft, and Nvidia.

“The event provided a great opportunity for experts from both industry and the LHC experiments to discuss their activities — as well as the challenges they face — in the exciting area of machine learning and data analytics,” says Maria Girone, CERN openlab CTO. “We especially appreciated the engagement of all participants in lively and constructive discussions. Over the course of the day many commonalities and areas of potential collaboration emerged.”

Biography:

Jakub obtained his first Bachelor degree in Control and Robotics in 2013 and a second one in Teleinformatics in 2014, both at the Wroclaw University of Technology. Later that year he obtained an Master degree in Computer Science from the same university. He joined CERN first as a Summer Student in 2013, contributing to projects made by the TE-MPE-MS section. Afterwards, Jakub worked for nearly 2 years as a Software Development Engineer in Nokia's R&D center in Wroclaw, Poland. He returned to CERN in 2016 as an openlab Fellow in the Beams Department, BE-ICS-SDS section. Currently, he is working on the future WinCC OA Data Archiver.

Biography:

Alejandro is an Industrial Engineer in Electronics and Automatics by the Technical University of Madrid and a student of a Master in Systems and Control. He is interested in embedded systems and controls and the software development related with them. He joined CERN as a Trainee in 2015 in the SCADA section, “Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition”, and now, he is working as Technical Student in the same section, developing a new alarm management for the different control systems at CERN.

Biography:

Flavia Alves completed her licentiate degree in Applied Mathematics in 2015 and she's on the way of obtaining her master's degree in Statistics and Operational Research in the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. In 2015, she joined the CERN Engineering Department to work on the Data Analytics research area, developing data mining activities associated with Industrial Controls. Currently, Flavia is a CERN openlab technical student in the Beams Department. Her main activities focus on the creation of new algorithms in order to transform large amounts of data into smart and useful data. Flavia's areas of interest are time series analysis and modelling, programming languages and data mining.

Biography:

Carlos is finishing his studies in Informatics Engineering in the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), in which Informatics and Calculus Laboratory he worked for 2 years. Specialized in Software Engineering, he is really interested Big Data, Business Intelligence and, actually, in everything related with data design, storage, manipulation and analysis. He gained some experience in this topics thanks to two related projects in Everis (NTT Data). He is also interested in mobile technologies, especially in Android: He had the opportunity to collaborate with Google during one year on this topic. He is currently working as a Technical Student at CERN in the BE-ICS-SDS section developing a Synoptic Locator Framework and improving the Alarm Management.
